Traditional cottage gardens are predominantly planted with annuals and herbaceous perennials which die back in winter. Many homeowners choose to have mixed borders so that visible bare earth is kept to a minimum. It is possible to keep the feel of a cottage garden by selecting evergreens with delicate looking leaves. Bulky looking evergreens with leathery leaves would be unsuitable.
